Why should a wireless network be secured?

A wireless network should be secured for many reasons.  An wireless network that is not secure allows anyone in the area to use your Internet connection and possibly access your files on your computer if file sharing is enabled. Allowing anyone on the wireless network reduces your bandwidth to access the Internet and illegal activity done through the network can be traced back to you. It would be very unfortunate to have law enforcement raid your home and sieze your computers because of illegal activity done through your network by others.

Tips to secure your wirless network:
- Change the password on the wireless router. You can be locked out of your own network if someone else changes the security settings.
- Use an encryption on the wireless router. The two standards are WPA and WEP. WPA is more secure but WEP is better than nothing at all.
- Turn off the broadcasting of the wireless network. If your are not announcing to the area that you have a wireless network, it is less likely to be accessed by others.
- Change the SSID from the default to something else. Even if broadcasting has been turned off, others can use the default SSID to access the wireless network if it has not been changed.
